Last night at InClassica

Brilliant and Cheerful Mozart
Coca Cola Arena

Turkish star pianist Fazıl Say was the soloist in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's brilliantly orchestrated and cheerful Piano Concerto No, 21 that many refer to as Elvira Madigan, because of Bo Widerberg's film. The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Dmitry Jablonsky played Mozart's concert along with Gioachino Rossini's famous overture to La gazza ladra, said to have been written by the composer on the very same day of the premiere, and Johannes Brahms's Symphony No. 2 that was received enthusiastically by the audience at the inauguration and is nowadays one of his most cherished compositions.

Dmitry Yablonksy
 - How did you enjoy the performance?Well, how could I not enjoy Brahms and the glorious music of Fazil Say — he’s a fabulous musician and I enjoyed it very much.”
 - How was the experience from the stage? It’s not so easy, it’s not a regular concert hall, but we tried to do our utmost to give the best possible concert.
 -
What are your thoughts on the festival and the organisation behind the project? I think it’s an absolutely phenomenal project, and it’s an incredible ‘investment’ in culture, especially here in Dubai. I think it’s fabulous, it’s a new frontier and a new world.”

Tonight at InClassica*

Musical Pilgrimage
Coca Cola Arena

With his Concerto for cello and orchestra No. 1 that allows the violoncello to compete effortlessly against the orchestra, Camille Saint-Saëns showcased the mastery of his texturing and established himself as a renowned composer. Alexey Shor's Musical Pilgrimage is a brilliant composition for cello and orchestra inspired by the virtuosity of 19th century music, baroque opulence and even Latin American music. Steven Isserlis is the soloist in these two fascinating pieces. Sergey Smbatyan and the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra combine the compositions with Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 that was declared the best symphony of all time, after the BBC Music Magazine surveyed 151 conductors working across the world, in 2016.

 - Steven Isserlis (cello)

 - Sergey Smbatyan
